Our Sensory

Growing Garden

In 2022, Ystalyfera Community Council generously permitted us to transform the previously unused outdoor space surrounding the community centre into what is now our Sensory Growing Garden. The garden provides a safe, secure environment thanks to the high-security fencing, making it an ideal outdoor learning and social space for children and young people, particularly those with disabilities that make them prone to high-risk elopement. Parents and carers can relax, knowing that their loved ones can enjoy the outdoors without fear or worry.

The development of the garden has been made possible by the generous support of the National Grid, Keep Wales Tidy, and Neath Port Talbot Council through the ENRaW grant, sponsored by the Welsh Government. This crucial funding allowed us to enlist the talents of Will of Wild Pygmy, a local carpenter, who crafted beautiful and practical elements for the garden. These include raised planters, a bespoke cascading water table that accommodates everyone—from toddlers to adults—encouraging inclusive play, and our highly popular relaxation swing, offering a peaceful spot for reflection and sensory engagement.

See our blog below to follow how the garden continues to develop and grow over time, lovingly managed and updated by our dedicated young volunteers.
